Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation involves using breast implants or fat layer to increase the size of breasts in order to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. It aims to achieve a more rounded shape, or to improve natural breast size asymmetry. It is also referred to as augmentation mammaplasty. The procedure typically increases the fullness of the breast besides enhancing the self image and confidence of the patient.

Breast implants may also be used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or injury.

When to go for Breast Augmentation?

  • Physically fit, not pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Breasts are fully developed

  • Too small or  asymmetrical breasts are bothering

  • If breasts have lost shape and volume post pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing

How Breast Augmentation is Performed?

Step 1 – Anesthesia: Mostly, includes intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.

Step 2 – Incision: Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimise visible scarring, including the apt incision out of various options available like along the areolar edge, the fold under the breast etc.

Step 3 – Inserting and placing the Breast Implant: After the incision is made, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (a submammary/ subglandular placement).

Step 4 – Closing the Incisions: Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue or skin adhesive and even surgical tape. The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible.

Types of Breast Implants

There are several different types of breast implants to be chosen based on the need in consultation with the plastic surgeon

(a)Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. In case, the implant shell leaks, a saline implant will collapse and the solution will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. These

provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel and are recommended in women of 18+ years.

(b) Structured Saline Breast Implants

Structured Saline Breast Implants are filled with sterile salt water, and contain an inner structure to make the implant feel more natural.

(c) Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with Silicone gel which feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. In case the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket but it will not collapse. You may require to visit your surgeon periodically to ensure the implants are functioning properly. An Ultrasound or MRI screening can assess their well being.

.Silicone breast implants are recommended to be used for women over 22+ years.

Gummy bear Breast Implants

Form-stable implants are termed as gummy bear breast implants because they retain their shape even if the implant shell is broken. The placement of gummy bear implants requires a slighter longer incision in the skin.

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants help  breasts appear fuller than form-stable implants. And as because the round implants are the same and even shape all over, there is slight less concern about their rotating out of place.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants can move with the breast implant pocket, which may give more natural movement and have the softest feeling.

Textured Breast Implants

Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and become repositioned. These implants may be available in many options.

After the Procedure

After surgery,  there is a period of close monitoring. The breasts are wrapped in gauze dressings and an elastic bandage or support bra to minimise swelling and support the breasts as they heal initially.

It is  important to follow the plastic surgeon's instructions carefully. Acute pain typically subsides in 1-5  days, but soreness and swelling may be experienced for a couple of weeks.
